Location

The Bahamas Islands are located North of Cuba, the closest island to the United States is Bimini, which is also known as the gateway to the Bahamas. The island of Abaco is to the east of Grand Bahama. The southeastern most islands are Great Inagua. Other notable islands include the Bahamas' largest island, Andros Island, and, Eleuthera  Cat Island, Long Island, San Salvador Island, Acklins, Crooked Island, Exuma and Mayaguana. Nassau, the Bahamas capital city, lies on the island of New Providence.

All the islands are low and flat, with ridges that usually rise no more than 15 to 20 m (49 to 66 ft). The highest point in the country is Mount Alvernia, or Como Hill, which has an altitude of 63 metres (210 ft).

The Bahamian dollar is pegged to the US dollar (though, in actuality, it is slightly more valuable), and US notes and coins are used interchangeably with Bahamian currency for most practical purposes. However, government exchange controls still apply for the purchase of foreign currency.

The Bahamas is classified as an upper middle-income developing country and has the third highest per capita income in the western hemisphere (after the United States and Canada). Tourism is the primary economic activity, accounting for about two thirds of the gross domestic product (GDP). Offshore finance is the second largest industry, accounting for about 15 per cent of GDP.

The Bahamas has become a particularly favorable target for international investment. It has established generous legal incentives to attract foreign investors and has streamlined government bureaucracy for expeditious project approval.

There is no income or corporate tax and no capital gains or inheritance tax in The Bahamas.

About 70% of government revenue is derived from the duties which apply to nearly all imported goods. There are duties on imports, which can range from 0% for books and computer software, to as high as 200%

Transportation

Easy access to The Bahamas is one reason for its long-standing popularity as a winter holiday destination. Direct flights can be taken from the UK with international airports on the main islands. Six major airports in The Bahamas are served by various international airlines, including Delta Airlines, Carnival Airlines, British Airways, Air Jamaica, American Eagle, US Airways, and Air Canada, allowing direct flights to and from key destinations in Europe, North and South America and the Caribbean, with connections around the globe.

The Bahamas is a few miles from the south Florida coast, in fact closer than Caribbean destinations; the islands can be reached quickly either by air or by sea.

Since there are so many islands in such close proximity in The Bahamas, many visitors choose to visit more than one. Bahamas Air  operates scheduled flights to all major Out Islands. In addition, charter companies operate scheduled flights, and private airplanes are also available for hire. Inter-island mailboats run weekly to/from all islands. The mailboats are a leisurely way to get around--one-way passage to just about anywhere for around $35.

The Bahamas is surrounded by clear blue sea and beautiful sunsets and can best be seen best from the air while flying in.

Housing

Most housing in the Bahamas is custom built and because of the location they are built to a strong building code to help give protection from the tropical storms and hurricanes. Many homes are built to a higher standard than the mainland properties because the owners do not reside in them all year round and require additional security. Many options are available for financing on properties, overseas investors should consider all financing options as many lenders are requiring a higher than normal deposit for foreign national mortgages. A popular mortgage is a multi currency mortgage allowing the buyers to switch between currencies taking an advantage of currency exchange gains. Attractions

With the islands surrounded by miles of beautiful seas the biggest attraction is the tropical beaches and underwater adventures. With many ship wrecks over the years there is plenty to explore.

Golf

Both golf and tennis have found their ideal location in the consistent sun of The Bahamas, and the islands regularly host world-class tournaments in each. There is no season to limit play here, just year-round blue skies and warm weather. Nassau averages seven hours of completely sunny skies per day, and rain seldom lasts for longer than it takes to get under cover, even during the rainy season. Paradise Island, The Abacos, Grand Bahamas Island and Eleuthera all feature golf courses, and may be found on hotel grounds.  While you do not need to be a hotel guest to play these courses, guests will receive discounts.

Weddings are also very popular in the Bahamas for couples just wanting to get away from it all. Any one of the number of islands and uninhabited cays, with their rugged shoreline that hug the Atlantic, or one of the numerous sandy beaches, provide an ideal backdrop where your "I Do" will be to the accompaniment of waves splashing up on the beach.
