Location

Clearwater is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida, USA, nearly due west of Tampa and northwest of St. Petersburg. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 108,787; however, according to the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau's estimates, the city's population fell slightly to 108,687. It is the county seat of Pinellas County. Clearwater is the smallest of the three principal cities in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area, most commonly referred to as the Tampa Bay Area. The four-county area is home to roughly 2.7 million residents, making it the second largest metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the state, and the third largest in the Southeastern United States.

Located in the Pinellas County, Clearwater is home to the Best “City Beach” where residents are comfortable in business suits or flip-flops. More than 5 million visitors come to Pinellas County beaches each year while the permanent population of the county is almost one million residents strong.

Clearwater has a diversity of activities from Museums to Jet Skies and also a luxurious Marina. The area attractions range closely from Bush Gardens / Adventure Island to Florida Botanical Gardens and pretty much have a good assortment of in between interests.

Enjoy the sea fishing off Clearwater Beach's fishing pier. "Sunsets at Pier 60" is a festival that runs every Thursday through Monday evening two hours prior to sunset to two hours past sunset.

Caladesi Island and Sand Key beaches have been named among the best natural beaches in the United States. Caladesi Island State Park is currently ranked second, primarily for its water quality, rustic charm, clean beaches, on-site amenities and its emphasis on wildlife. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium has all the underworld adventures you could ask for.

Transportation

The Tampa International Airport serves Clearwater and the rest of the Tampa Bay Area as the primary means of air travel.

The St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport in comparison however, has seen an increase in usage recently with 747,369 passengers accounted for in 2007.

Plane

 

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) bus service is currently Clearwater's only form of public transit. The service offers 39 local routes, two express routes, and an exclusive beach trolley that runs north and south along Pinellas County's barrier islands. In abundance these routes can be found passing through or ending in Clearwater. Fares are presently $1.50 per bus trip, and $2.50 for a single one-way trip on an express bus.

One of PSTA's major transfer centers, Park Street Terminal, is located in Downtown Clearwater at the corner of Park Street and South Garden Avenue.

U.S. Route 19 is by far the city's most heavily traveled route, some parts of it carrying nearly 100,000 vehicles per day. It is a limited-access freeway for a majority of its length in Clearwater, with an exception being the portion between Druid Road and Haines Bayshore Road. Plans are being developed to upgrade this piece to freeway standards, however.

Housing

The Clearwater housing market includes traditional Florida single family home neighborhoods, high rise communities and golf communities together with larger homes on acreage. As a second home buyer’s destination, Clearwater has a wide range of housing choices, including beach communities, boating communities and golf course communities. The beach condo is becoming very popular with second home buyers as the location and ocean views make the re sale values secure.

Schools

Many people ask me when moving to Florida, how good are the schools? My answer is always the same how good do you want them to be. Attractions on Clearwater Beach include boat and sailing charters, cruises, para-sailing, personal watercraft rentals, diving charters, nightly entertainment and a gambling cruise ship that leaves twice daily. To name just a few of the most popular Belleview Biltmore Resort, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise and StarLite Cruises

The Clearwater Jazz festival brings in 90,000 spectators to one of the world's premier Jazz festivals. Sponsored by 94.1 FM Smooth Jazz Tampa Bay and many other corporations, The Clearwater Jazz Festival is the largest free outdoor concert in the South East U.S.

The Beach

Why should someone consider Clearwater and its Island Beaches? Maybe it will be because it is one of Florida’s most popular vacation sports. Clearwater Beach is known for its spectacular sunsets and holds the record for most days of sunshine (361 days) its boasts a great temperature and mild climate. It is within easy reach of Tampa and Orlando and has warm tropical breezes and breathtaking sunsets. Clearwater has a selection of beaches including Northwater Beach and Sand Key Beach.

As in many parts of Florida, Clearwater is a big retirement area and relaxing on one of the many championship golf courses is a full time event for many people who visit or settle down in the area.
