Firstly I should point out that I am not an Attorney nor can I offer any form of legal advice, but I can give you several good reasons to employ one if you are considering Florida as your home or vacation home.

In my own experience when I first moved to Florida my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) asked me who my Attorney was. My answer was “I don’t need one”, his reply was “its not if someone will try to sue you, it is when they will try to sue you”. The thought remained with me for a few months until that day when someone hit my car in a car park. The first words the other driver said to me was “I am going to sue you for damages and injury’ I was not prepared and got immediately worried that I could now lose everything from a minor accident that was not even my fault. It pays to be prepared and have an Attorney already either employed on a retainer or a legal plan in place. I will tell you the outcome of this incident at the end of this page.

Now if you wondered how you find an attorney? Don’t you will find them everywhere. If fact if you open the Yellow Pages they have the biggest section right in the front. Finding a good one is a different story. In fact if you are unfortunate enough to get a speeding ticket in Florida you will find your mail box full of letters thanks to the public records within three days from Attorneys wanting to represent you in court for a fixed fee.

Many Attorneys specialize in either certain crimes or types of law, my experience with my clients is that they have had to call upon an Attorney in an emergency such as a traffic incident and pay an additional fee for prompt action. Many good Attorneys now offer their services on priority based provided a retainer fee is lodged with their account. I have found with my clients that this is the best way to have their services available 24 hours a day.

An Attorney who is familiar with international law (UK & USA) is an added advantage and only the better qualities Attorneys have these skills. In particular if you have immigration issues you should only use a specialist in that field that has a good track record. I have referred my clients to Attorneys in Florida and also Attorney / Solicitors who now practice in the UK. I only refer to the best and in many cases a strong direct letter from the Attorney can resolve the issue or dismiss the person who is trying to make something out of nothing at your expense.

A important point to remember, if you are entering the USA on a immigration visa and get involved in domestic dispute or criminal activity whether your fault or not, it could effect you immigration status and could have your visa revoked and you possibly deported. Having a good Attorney on hand will defiantly assist you.

So back to my incident in the car park, the other driver was furious that he had knocked my car while pulling out of a car parking space. He demanded cash on the spot for the damage and possible injury even though it was his fault. Luckily in Florida all traffic accidents have to be reported to the police so I made the call. When the police officer arrived the guy who had crashed into me changed his altitude and when questioned by the police it was discovered that he was wanted for insurance fraud claiming false injuries. The stress of the moment prompted me to immediately get an Attorney on a retainer just in case.
